What Are Lift Vans & Shipping Containers?

The lift van has been the preferred method of transporting household goods in the moving industry for nationwide shipping and storage for the last 50 years. These wooden “crates” were originally outlined for military moves.

A shipping container is a durable container able to withstand any sort of handling such as shipment and storage. In the international moving industry, you may often hear these containers called intermodal freight containers. In either case, these containers are ideal for those looking to transport a large amount of products and/or raw materials between domestic locations and overseas.

Stevens International Forwarding is a full-service provider of international relocation services. To that end, we are dedicated to providing the best shipping protection for all different types of goods whether by land, sea or air.

Our professional movers help ensure that your product or belongings are securely wrapped, packed and loaded safely into our sealed, durable shipping containers.

Stevens International Forwarding offers three different modes of transport:

Liftvans – For less than container load shipments (LCL), industry-standard new or quality vans are employed. Each wooden crate can hold anywhere from 1,000-1,500+ lbs depending on the size of your items. Can be used for domestic shipping and storage.

Steamship Containers – These types of shipping containers are generally suited for larger shipments over 650 cubic feet.

Air Freight Boxes – Small LCL shipments for those that are looking to reach their destination in a short period of time.

LiftVan Dimensions

A standard liftvan is approximately 87’’x45’’x87’’, with an estimated 200 cubic feet of loading space.

Note: packing materials take 10-15% of the space.

Container Dimensions

If you have need for larger shipments, it may be more cost effective to ship in a container. Containers are large metal boxes used for international transit. See below for our shipping container sizes:

How to Pack Your Container

Whether you hire laborers to help wrap, pack and load your items, or you feel like tackling this obstacle with some friends, here are a few tips on how to properly pack your container:

  • Pack your valuables and essentials in a separate box.
  • Labeling boxes makes unloading easy and helps with your inventory checklists.
  • Load heavier goods in smaller boxes or containers to ensure easy lifting.
  • Lightweight items should be placed in large containers for easier handling and loading.
  • Pack the container full as much as possible to provide greater protection.
  • Use picture boxes, bubble wrap or any other padding materials when loading pictures and/or mirrors.
  • Do not load all heavy items at once. It will be easier to unload and load your containers if the weight has been evenly distributed.
  • Place heavier items at the bottom and the lighter ones at the top.
  • Contact one our professional relocation coordinators for pickup.
